The town has acquired a Code Enforcer, a retired Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputy, who will be starting July 1st. This blog will try to get a link or somehow post the Town Codes so we will all know the expectations, “ I didn’t know you couldn’t ………..”. I'm sure they are available at the Town Office and may be on the web site but my quick check turned up empty.
The town will also be increasing the ’09 budget (starts July 1st) to support additional hours of active duty Sheriff’s Deputy coverage. Here are some specifics of the program that include this blog:
1. “He will keep a log of all stops and observations he makes. That log will be passed from deputy to deputy so we have consistency.
2. As he is beginning his shift, the deputy will review the past week’s blog updates posted by block captains so he can follow up/be where he needs to be etc.”

I live near the flower shop and I have been working with the FCSO deputies in trying to curb the juvenile problem at 107 N. 2nd Street (flower shop). FCSO contacted the owner of the property who boarded up the building and also agreed to prosecute for trespassing. I was informed to call it in anytime the juveniles were seen on this property. I have done this several times; however, by the time the deputies arrive, the juveniles are usually gone. I am encouraging anyone who witnesses the juveniles trespassing on this property at anytime to please call the non-emergency dispatch number at 301-600-2071 and report that juveniles are trespassing on posted property. You can make this call anonymously. Please, please help by making the call!!
P.S. The phone number for FCSO on the main page of the blog is incorrect...the correct number is 301-600-1046 (front desk).
Good catch on the FCSO #. It's been changed.
I wonder if the Sheriff's Office accepts photos as evidence?
what if you could get the names of the juveniles that hang outside the flower shop would anything come of it ? i think you should impose a fine to the parent of the juveniles that are out after curfew. i know alot of the kids an know that the parents don't care where they are at or what they are doing. this might make them care and maybe pay for the damages that they caused to some towns people houses
I recommend calling the Sheriff's office to see if there is any short term enforcement they can take. It is my understanding that the town code enforcer (starting in July) will do just what you are suggesting, intiate the process for the town to impose fines on parents whose children are violating town ordinances. Prosecuting vandalism however does not require town codes to enforce and should be immediately enforcable by the Sheriff.
We had a very productive meeting with Sheriff Jenkins and I do a change on North Second Street. Lets hope it holds up.
I would like to see the new code officer and town do something about the blighted house on south main with the graffiti on the siding.
I think you guys should worry more with your own lives, don't you recall being young at one point and time everyone was young once. Let them be . JUst becauseyour lives are boring or should I say have no life dont pick on the young ones. Just because you have one or two bad apples dont take it out on the rest. I am pretty sure you guys have all broken a law or rule...NO ONE IS PURFECT! please get off your high horse. It is summer let the kids be kids.
If the kids are not doing any harm to anyone, then I don't see any problems with them hanging around.
Personally, I live on a farm where there is always something to do. On the other hand, if I was a kid living in town, I would be very bored and would probably be doing the same. Geeze... Kids are high energy and need a variety of stuff to do.
When the kids want to hang out, why don't someone try to work with them on getting involved with the community or try to see what they are interested in doing and report back. Maybe somebody in town can use their skills or maybe develop a better plan of action then calling the police.
Just a thought.
I believe these kids are old enough to find employment. There is a restaurant and a grocery store. Maybe check the town office to see if there is volunteer work around the town area withing walking distance
"If the kids are not doing any harm to anyone, then I don't see any problems with them hanging around." - See that's the problem, they aren't just hanging around. They are breaking and entering, trespassing, littering, vandalizing, etc. All of which are against the law.
Our concerns aren't directed to every kid/teen in the Town - it's one particular group of them and we all know who they are. And as a parent, there's no way I'd let my child hang out in the streets all night long...even if she's "bored".
I say thank you to Sheriff Jenkins and the FCSO deputies for patrolling our fine town and making a difference because it is surely noticed.
That is the point these kids are doing all above mentioned and more. I believe the town if it has not done so needs to look at the present curfew and age. There is no teenager that needs to be out at 2:00 a.m. running up and down the streets. I have seen adults which I believe are parents just dropping their kids off at the flower shop and going off.
